Maddie's Kittens — Noah's Ark's first litter of 2009

Part 1
Save a Life! Sponsor a Kitten!

Maddie, an unwanted young adult cat, came to us in the last week of her pregnancy. I'm a Noah's Ark employee, and decided to take Maddie home with me so she didn't have to give birth in a cage. Thankfully, I have a nice cozy laundry room where Maddie could be safe and well cared for while waiting to give birth. Maddie is a very sweet cat, little more than a kitten herself, and we connected right away. During that last week of her pregnancy she loved to sprawl out on me and have me rub her legs and back (which were probably sore!). Unfortunately, Maddie had a cold at that time - which was also making her feel lousy. With some pretty intensive care, she now feels better.

The big day: March 11, very early in the morning, the kittens were born! Here's a picture of the "kitty pile" that first day. They pile together like this for warmth, comfort, and security. Each kitten only weighs a few ounces, and can easily fit in the palm of your hand.

March 14: due to momma Maddie's illness, she didn't produce enough milk at first. I had to help out by supplementing with kitten formula.

March 19: at eight days old, one of the kittens opened one eye! Kittens are born with eyes fused closed, and they begin to open at about 7-14 days. Did you know that little kittens are unable to retract (pull in) their claws?

You can sponsor a Noah’s Ark kitten! Your donation of $10, $25 or even $50 will go directly toward the care of these precious kittens.
